OLD GROWTH FOREST

Clear felling:
Clear-felling is a logging procedure which fells every tree; it is the fastest way to satisfy the demand of the woodchip industry.

Deforestation:
Deforestation is the conversion of forested areas to non-forest land for use such as arable land, pasture, urban use, logged area, or wasteland. Generally, the removal or destruction of significant areas of forest cover has resulted in a degraded environment with reduced biodiversity. In many countries, massive deforestation is ongoing and is shaping climate and geography.

Dieback:
acts like a biological bulldozer by killing susceptible plant species in forests, woodlands and heathlands. Irreversible changes have taken place to many ecosystems and are still occurring.

Native forest:
any locally indigenous forest community containing the full complement of native species and habitats normally associated with that community, or having the potential to develop these characteristics

nature reserve:
is a protected area of importance for wildlife, flora, fauna or features of geological or other special interest, which is reserved and managed for conservation and to provide special opportunities for study or research. Nature reserves may be designated by government institutions in some countries, such as the United Kingdom, or by private landowners, such as charities and research institutions, regardless of nationality.

Regrowth forest:
forest stands regenerated either naturally or by seeding following death or removal of the forest overstorey

soil erosion:
Soil erosion caused by water and wind is a widespread problem in both rural and urban areas.

Soil erosion removes valuable top soil which is the most productive part of the soil profile. This results in lower yields and higher costs of production.
