The Importance of Following a Direct Order
There are many reasons why a marine should follow the orders they are given and every single one is important. An order is a tasking given to a marine of something that needs to be done in a timely and efficient manner. The three main reasons why it is important for a marine to follow the orders they are given is to be combat effective, disciplined, and to just be a good marine. When a marine doesn't follow the orders they are given in not only hurts themselves but it hurts the team and the goals of the mission. If one single Marine in a unit is ineffective at following orders this slows down the progress of the unit by making the NCOs deal with a marine who can't help with the workload of the unit. The importance of following direct orders cannot be emphasized enough. In the military world this is key to mission success. When an order is issued by a competent authority, it is issued with the understanding that subordinates will carry out that order, effectively and efficiently. When or where that order is issued does not take precedence on the importance of that order. The orders issued in garrison are just as important as the ones being issued in a combat zone. It is important that the order be understood and done when told to, to avoid further problems. Military discipline and effectiveness is built on the foundation of obedience to orders. Recruits are taught to obey, immediately and without question, orders from their superiors, right from day-one of boot camp. Military members who fail to obey the lawful orders of their superiors risk serious consequences. Article 90 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) makes it a crime for a military member to willfully disobey a superior commissioned officer. Article 91 makes it a crime to willfully disobey a superior Noncommissioned or Warrant Officer.
