An Adolescence Memory
We all approach times when certain expectations of a given situation are struck down by an obstacle. Life always has payoffs and an example of this is when we are challenged by these difficult times. Sometimes we are forced to struggle, however as the philosopher Nietzsche says, “What does not kill you makes you stronger.” I experienced this when I finally left my family, friends, and hometown to go away for school. I hated high school. I was forced to go to a catholic school with ridiculous rules such as having our shirts tucked in, being clean-shaven every day, and going to liturgy every Friday. When I finally convinced my parents to allow me to switch schools, I landed in a place that gave me feelings of uncertainty, self consciousness, and worst of all rejection because I came from the rival all boys private school.
One positive aspect of attending Cardinal Newman, my first school, was that I met my best friend Ryan. After high school he was accepted to San Diego State University. I decided to go with Ryan to San Diego and go to the community college. This is where my life changed.
I was all unpacked and the time had come. I went outside to say goodbye to my parents and girlfriend. We all cried and hugged. It was mutual that none of us could manage to be vocally tough enough with our quivering lips to express, “Goodbye, I love you.” I went into my new room, collapsed onto my bed and instantly felt regret and sorrow due to my current situation. I cried until I thought that I had no more tears, but still more and more ran down my face. Emptiness, loss, and confusion surfaced in my mind. Was this where I was supposed to be? I constantly questioned my decision. In essence, I pretty much followed Ryan to San Diego. While he resided in the dorms meeting hundreds of other freshman in his exact position, I was in my own secluded world downtown with my 30-year roommate I found on Craigslist.
