Going Green

America has become the number one polluter of the world according to the Environmental Defense Fund. Our quality and ways of living have contributed to this. It is scary to think of where our world will be in ten years from now, if we do not do something about this problem. It is amazing how much we can do to help save our planet and global warming. A person can become an environmentalist in everyday life.
Air pollution is one of our biggest problems. It is disturbing when out on the road to see a single person in an unnecessary huge SUV like a Hummer. I can only imagine what the cost is to fill a gas hog like that. Carpooling is one way of becoming an environmentalist. The fewer cars we have out on the road, the less smog we contribute to the air. I have never taken online/offline classes until now. I live in Bakersfield and driving to Taft is a good 45 minute drive. So, I decided I would save gas and keep one less car off the road this summer. For the fall, I made a schedule to where I only have to go two days a week. One of the days I have school I will take the bus. The GET bus offers a shuttle from Bakersfield to Taft and sends out a one free day bus pass, once a month in the mail.
Recycling is another contribution we can make in helping save the environment. It is sad to think of people who don’t recycle anything, because they believe it is time consuming and too much effort. Recycling is an easy task that solely involves a purchase of a couple trash cans or bins. In my home I have bins for all cans, plastic bottles, and for newspaper/paper and cardboard products. One of the benefits to this is we take our cans and bottles to a separate recycling center and make money. I believe the city is starting to offer a recycling service that will be picked up for you. When I go to the market or store and plastic bags are the only option, I save those for bathroom trash liners. The market Trader Joes offers only paper bags. If you save your bags...
